COVID-19 Booster Doses

Booster shots have been approved by the FDA for moderately and severely immune compromised individuals 12 years and older who received either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine and completed their vaccination series at least 28 days ago. Community providers included pharmacies and primary care providers have appointments and walk-in availability. Residents should consult with their physician to discuss the benefits of an additional dose of an mRNA vaccine and to request documentation of eligibility from a provider as this may be required by some vaccination sites.

According to the New York State Department of Health guidance issued on August 16th, “due to insufficient data at this time, the EUA amendment for an additional dose does not apply to the Janssen/Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine and does not support use of additional mRNA COVID-19 vaccine dose after a single-dose Janssen/Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccination.”

The New York State Department of Health Commissioner, Dr. Howard Zucker has advised local health departments that “a booster dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna mRNA COVID-19 vaccines will be needed to maximize vaccine-induced protection and prolong its durability, recognizing that many vaccines are associated with a reduction in protection over time, and acknowledging that additional vaccine doses could be needed to provide long lasting protection.” The FDA is presently reviewing boosters for the general public and is expected to issue guidance in the coming weeks to allow for vaccine booster doses. Reports indicate these boosters will be recommended at least 8 months following the completion of a vaccine series.
